hello, to all the beautiful people walking through the beautiful scenery in quebec city! so many of you have already gotten the chance to meet our quebec city gtv team, but we thought it was time to let all of you know a little bit about the people who've been supplying your vitaminwater fix all summer long. summer might be crawling to a close, but we still have plenty more good times in the works, and you can count on mathieu, dominique and jessie to make every minute count.

dominique.jpg dominique gauthier is definitely a fan of the summer. the proof? her favourite karaoke jam is 'the summer of '69' by bryan adams. a classic. she is also a huge fan of james blunt, and has been driven to tears by his moving lyrics, like "I'll be the father of your child, i'd spend a lifetime with you" (she considers james blunt her lover, we won't tell if you won't). dominique is psyched that she finished her degree at 21, loves sunsets and thinks worms are gross. she's loved every job she's ever had, but right now loves traveling to the hottest spots in quebec city to bring you the vitaminwater.

mathieu lavallee 2.jpg

the next member of the quebec city gtv is mathieu lavallee, and there's something he wants you to know...go habs! mathieu will be the man in the white nike airs, playing spin the bottle and handing out the frosty vitaminwater. when he's not obsessively tweeting, he's studying law, so make sure you follow the rules when you step up to play some of the fun vitaminwater games he runs. mathieu loves traveling in europe, just as he loves roaming quebec to meet up with the extended vitaminwater family. warning: don't ask him to show off his yoga skills. that will just put mathieu to sleep.

jessie huard 2.jpg

jessie huard would like to call her autobiography "an eventful life", and from what we know she is off to one great start. she loves abercrombie and fitch, but can't stand the film "2012" (which mathieu doesn't like either - it must be terrible). her favourite karaoke tune might be "runaway", but don't run away if you spot jessie out somewhere fun. in fact, run towards her. say hello, and grab a vitaminwater.

you know a little bit about the quebec city gtv'ers, but there's a lot more to find out, so make your plans to link up in person. we have some truly amazing good times coming to the quebec city area over the next few days, and we'd love for all of you to join us for a good time.

the gtv posse will be all over quebec city this weekend, so chances are good that you'll run into them during your travels. here's the skinny to help you track them down.

friday september 3, find us outside at un été festin activités d'animation sur les quais, which is at quai bassin louise. there will be musicians, animations and lot of fun in the streets from 4-9pm o'clock. then from 9-11:30 pm, the gtv gang will be at le circle, for dj mini. then they will be finishing off the night outside stade municipale, after the capitales de québec baseball game. that sounds like the makings of a home run evening.

saturday, september 4th and sunday, september 5th, you can get your vitaminwater fix from noon to 5pm at fête arc-en-ciel de québec. this is a great place to show your face, and your pride, so come on down. the gtv crew will be near the intersection of rue st-jean and place d'youville. this is going to be a huge party all weekend long! we love a rainbow, whether it's made from a bunch of bottles, on a flag or a sea of people.

it's going to be a fantastic and fun weekend to get september rolling, and we can't wait to see all of you in person. so don't be shy, come out and say 'hello'. we'll see you soon quebec.

we can't get enough of proenza schouler's futuristic, but wearable clothing. the patterns, textures and cuts seem to come from outerspace, but simultaneously fit earthlings just perfectly. the whole image they present, everywhere from their website to their runway shows, oozes low-key cool.

when we were recently turned on to this behind the scenes video, of the making of their fall 2010 collection... our collective jaws dropped. the visuals, atmosphere and moody soundtrack by washed out, are notches above the standard runway video. this isn't just a bunch of models parading around. this is an original piece of fashion video art. enjoy.

no purchase necessary. open to canadian residents (excluding residents of the province of quebec) who are of the age of majority. contest closes at 11:59:59 pm (edt) on october 11, 2010. to enter, entrants must read any of the available posts and comment on one post. one prize is available to be won and consists of an iphone 4. arv $780 cdn. random draw on october 26, 2010 at 2:00 pm edt. odds of winning depend on the number of post received. correct answer to a mathematical skill-testing question is required to win. subject to official rules which are listed here.

heart-internet-love.jpg

we all love the web. you probably wouldn't be hanging around here if you didn't. there's so many unique, amazing, wonderful and strange things to find, it can actually boggle the mind. a very smart gentleman, Clay Shirky recently wrote, to paraphrase, we don't have an information problem, we have a filtering problem. essentially, there is so much cool stuff on the interwebz, it's impossible to sift through it all! that's a nice problem to have!

we hope that you stop by here, at the vitaminwater canada blog, to find out what's cool. along these lines, we wanted to share our favourite places and dig up what's new, what's amazing, what's superfly and what's the next big thing.

metafilter

metafilter is one of the older sites on the web, and what makes it great is the community. there is a lot of really smart people who hang around metafilter, and they are generous with the nuggets of greatness they dig up on the web. you might find anything from a story about a great photographer you've never heard of to a story about a travel destination very few people know. metafilter is light on the commentary. they drop you a link, explain what it is, and let you make up your own mind. it's updated often, so you can count on them when you need your fix of fresh web goodness.

boingboing!

boingboing began as a paper fanzine, and has morphed into one of the coolest places to find fresh culture. this site has a very strong personality, and runs on the whims, obsessions and hobbies of the editors. the human element is what separates boingboing from a lot of other info sites on the web. you might show up and find a picture of a darth vader birthday cake, a review of the best drawing pencils, a silly video of animals dancing or a heads up on a new sci-fi novel. most of the cool stuff they post shows up here first, then makes its' way around the web. if you like to hear things first, pay boingboing a visit throughout the day.

fark

"it's not news, it's fark" is the motto of drew curtis' online playground for the strange and sublime. fark works in a very specific way. there is a massive, very invested user community. they comb the web 24/7 for breaking stories in all categories, and then submit them to fark with their own headlines. the headlines are often hilarious. it's possible to enjoy fark without ever clicking on a link, and a quick scan of the headlines is guaranteed to produce a chuckle. this place has a language, and memes all its' own, so it may take a few days of reading to be able to grasp all the inside jokes. once you do, hold on tight because it's a unique way to view the planet.

the 'random' button on wikipedia

ok, don't hold it against me, but i'll admit...i've spent hours just hitting the wikipedia 'random' button again and again. why? it's a way to discover fascinating things about the world you may never discover any other way. did you realize wikipedia even had a random button (hint: it's just over there on the left, you can also hit 'control-x'). this is a cool way to discover new photos, interests, hobbies and creatures. anything from an obscure brit-com to the history of graffiti, anything from ancient times to the present could pop up. music, sports, animals, history, current events, art and notable people are all fair game. the element of surprise makes this an especially great place to discover interesting bits on the web.

reddit

you probably know digg, the infamously insular link dump. you may not know reddit. reddit is like digg, minus the drama, politics and trolls. users submit links, and then they are divided by subject and voted up and down. unlike many user generates content sites, the community here consistently provides good stuff. if something is on the reddit front page, it's nearly always worth a read. things that end up as 'viral', usually show up on reddit a few days before the rest of the web catches on. another unique feature is the way posts are categorized. they have unique and interesting ways to separate content, with cool filters like 'what i learned today', 'ask reddit' and a very lively 'canada' section. if you like your surfing smart, witty and mostly drama free, then give reddit a visit.

this is just a jumping off point, and just a handful of our favourite sites that we like to visit. we're really curious about your favourite sites too. where do you hang around the web? leave us a comment, or drop us a line on twitter and fill us in. definitely let us know if you enjoy any of the sites we've shared here. see you in the discussion!

i'm a jeremy laing fan girl. he's one designer that i've talked about since my blogging career began. at first i was too shy to even talk to him. it took danielle meder of final fashion to make that first connection and now years later i can speak to him without feeling like an idiot. well, let's say most times. ha.

jeremy laing started his namesake womenswear line in 2005. he is a graduate of ryerson's fashion program who studied in london and worked at alexander mcqueen years before his death. he's one of the toronto crew of industry folks that make the seasonal pilgrimage to new york for ny fashion week. for now working in toronto and showing in new york is working for jeremy. he's active in the arts scene in toronto and hosts a monthly party in the west end called big primpin with his partner frank. it's been a staple of the scene for many years now and i drop by from time to time.

i have two silk jeremy laing dresses in my closet. one is a sample and one of a kind from the fall 2008 collection and features the kaleidoscope print developed with fellow designer calla haynes. the other is from the fall 2007 collection. he has a knack for incorporating unusual and vibrant prints into the clothing. the construction techniques used by jeremy put him in that league of designers that are always pushing garment construction without destroying style and wearability. for fall 2010, jeremy added fur to the mix. he sourced canadian fox, muskrat and beaver furs that were sustainably hunted. these were dyed in rich red and blue colours. they were then incorporated into the clothing or made as accessories. i had a little dress up day in his studio with the collection. i'm in love with this blue fur hood.

designers like jeremy are the reason i love fashion so much. it isn't just about creating clothing it's about development as a designer and artist. it's fascinating to watch and i'm getting giddy at the thought of spring 2011.

if i told you i was a huge tennis fan, i'd be lying. that's not to say i don't appreciate the sport. i certainly do. i've seen the us open in person, and find myself somewhat mesmerized when i happen to be in a place that has a tennis match on television. it's a tough sport, that takes strength, speed and astounding coordination.

so when i came across this video essay the beauty of the power game, my jaw literally hit the floor. in this series of slow motion video vignettes, the biggest names in women's tennis, demonstrate their swings and footwork, against plain backdrops. what makes this video essay different, is that is slowed down quite a bit. you can see every nuance of the way they shuffle their feet, swing their arms, draw back the racquet and smash the ball into oblivion.

both the technical videography and the performance of the players is so perfectly done. i have never seen a sport presented in this way. i'm sure you'll enjoy watching this. have you ever seen sports presented like this before? if so we'd love to hear about it. leave us a comment and share, because if there is one thing we love it's amazing art, meeting amazing athletes.

hello winnipeg. how is your summer going? ours has been great. thanks for asking. we've had a chance to meet some of you already last year, but we're in need of some more peg city lovin and the gtv is about to set sail!

2010 gtv team introductions (page 9 of 18).jpg

corey leslie aka "tippy shamrock" (you'll have to ask), is one lucky man. he dumped his bike and other than a hearty "whoah...that was a close one!" has lived to tell the tale. maybe some of that luck will rub off on you. don't rub him the wrong way though. just stay clear of karaoke and it will be all good. not every gtv'er is ready to grab the mic. his least favourite film is? "the hebrew hammer" (we concur). so what does corey like? roaming winnipeg to hook you up with some vitaminwater, wherever the action is. it beats his last job: cleaning out industrial boilers. yikes.

samara.jpg

samara slijker will go all out to get an apple pie, especially if it's the last one. you may recognize her as the one in the leopard print flats, being serenaded by the sweet strains of hobo music on the streets. she'd like to title her autobiography "the crazy life of a bar star", which fits hand in hand with her favourite song "all these things i've done" by the killers. those are the makings of a life well lived. she'll admit to owning a snuggie, and we're completely cool with that. if you ask nicely maybe she'll break it out for an impromptu pic when you're having a chat over a vitaminwater. stranger things have happened.

head shots 006.JPG

sarah rasmussen likes to live by the "no regrets" philosophy and we know you won't have any regrets when you meet up with her at some fun event around winnipeg. be sure to ask for instructions on her own personal yoga pose: the frantic flamingo. it's a good thing for everyone to learn. she's been parasailing in the dominican republic, and she shot through the air at the valley fair. she's down for some adventures winnipeg, so make the trek out to welcome her to the vitaminwater fold.

now you know who to look for, but where can you find them this weekend? wherever the action is of course. we've got a packed weekend of events all over winnepeg, where you can swing by, play some games, grab a vitaminwater and chat up the gtv crew in person.

friday august 27, head on over to the morden corn and apple fest, one of the largest festivals in canada. there will be music, a bbq competition, free corn (and vitaminwater!), as well as a farmer's market and craft show. there will also be mud racing, so bring your wellies and get ready for a good time.

saturday august 28 head on down to the rocky mountain soap run. this charity event supports helping hands, and the gtv will be there to keep everyone hydrated throughout the event. find them all along the route, throughout the entire event. good luck to everyone taking up the challenge for this excellent cause!

on sunday august 29, the winnipeg gtv team will be heading out of town and crossing the border over to their beautiful neighboring province called ontario. more specifically, they'll be in downtown [kenora] (http://www.ontariotowns.net/Kenora/). where they will be hittin up more streets, beaches, docks, boats, cabins and shops than you can imagine! so if you're sunbathing on the dock or wakeboarding by, and are feeling in need of a whole lot of hydration, then come into town and find a whole lot of vitaminwater!

we're very excited to see all of you in person, winnipeg. while you're planning your weekend, be sure to schedule in some time to swing through one of these wicked places and meet the gtv teams, grab a vitaminwater and have some interesting conversation. we'll see you there!

berri_mural_2.jpg

we're very excited to unveil our new mural in downtown montreal, featuring the poutine clan! many of you may remember that we recently opened a pop-up photo studio in montreal. we invited all of you to come on down, strike your best pose, and have your photo taken. we threw the photos up on the web, and asked for you to vote for your favourites. the lucky winners would become the new face of vitaminwater in montreal.

well, the time has come to share the lucky winners with you. the poutine clan, are currently featured in a plus sized mural at the berri metro station on the green line. you can head down there to see what vitaminwater looks like (hint: it looks like you!).

congratulations to the poutine clan. we'd also like to thank everyone who paid us a visit, and had their photo taken, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

you'll have a chance to see the mural in person from now, until september 12th 2010. so, have you seen the mural in person? if you have, we'd love to see your photos and opinions of the artwork. leave us a comment and let us know what you think montreal.

i first came into contact with juma in 2007. i was wearing the line for a photoshoot with now magazine for an article about bloggers. later that year i reported on the juma Fall 2007 collection for blogTO. in that post i chastise them about having kurta (drop crotch) pants in the collection. i laugh about it because it's three years later and i own a few pairs of juma kurta pants.

juma is the brother and sister team of alia and jamil juma . the label was born in 2003 with womenswear and expanded to include menswear a few years later. juma's style is contemporary sportswear with jumpsuits and kurta pants being signature features. juma is carried by retailers across the world and locally at serpentine, 290 ion, pho pa, sydneys and model citizen. availability in montreal is at simons and of course there is online at jumastudio.com. these days alia and Jamil are returning to their globetrotting childhood lifestyle as they divided their time running the business in new york, guangzhou and toronto.

fall 2010 marks the first season of juma scarves. they are a whopping 45" square and are made with silk twill. prints are designed in-house and laser printed on the silk. this season uses nature influences with crows, trees, bones and skulls. i remember seeing samples of the scarves earlier in the year so having production available for the taking is very exciting. i now own four and after seeing spring 2011 scarf offerings i need four more. juma dominated my wardrobe like no other canadian designer (complexgeometries would be second). i have a large selection of clothing but i always find myself wearing something juma a few days out of the week. you can always find me tweeting about wearing something juma (examples 1, 2, 3).

watch the juma fall 2010 video

i think the juma spring 2011 is an exciting collection. they are influenced by their time living in kenya. i saw the collection just before they took it on the trade show road and it's a visual delight of spectacular african influenced prints.

visiting gorgeous places. getting a look at the hottest fashions before they hit the stores or even the runways. spending your time with the most beautiful people on earth. getting paid to document your fantastic life with the latest digital gear as well as classic cameras from the past. it sounds like a fantasy job, but for fashion photographer jeremiah wilson it's just another day on the job.

4908599923_421f223f0e.jpg

jeremiah was generous enough to invite me to spend an afternoon with him on location at a fashion shoot for steve madden shoes. he showed me the ropes of making models and clothes look perfect on the screen or a magazine page. we also spoke about his high tech gear for capturing images, his favorite fashions, photographers and how he got his start as a shooter.

jpg

i met jeremiah on a perfectly sunny day on the grounds of a well landscaped private school, which was serving as the backdrop for the photo action. the shoot was 'back to school' themed, and featured the hot new shoes from steve madden. when you see models in catalogs or ads, everything looks so serene. what you can't see is all the work it takes to get those perfect shots. along with jeremiah and his camera, there was a makeup artist, a hairdresser, a technical assistant and a logistics manager. you could quickly tell this was work they had all done before, because they were functioning like an army on the march. they performed a complicated ballet of moving flashes, cameras, screens, props, models again and again with precision.

fashion photography is on the cutting edge of digital technology, and the geek in me was giddy surrounded by all this high tech camera gear. jeremiah's main camera for this shoot was acanon 5d mark 2, which is a digital slr. he let me pick it up and pop a few shots. f you've never had the pleasure of handling a super high end camera, the first thing you'll notice is how heavy it is (but good heavy, it feels very solid). this is a serious piece of machinery. on the ground, jeremiah had a macbook pro set up. whenever he took a shot with the canon, it was digitally beamed right to the laptop, so he could see the results of his work instantly, and make any adjustments to lighting, or the model, right there on the fly. i have to say, this impressed me. there wasn't even a wire running from the camera.

4909190524_394e9be048.jpg

i had the chance to watch on the macbook as the photos rolled in, live. in the photo below, you'll notice jeremiah with what looks like a blanket over his head. it's actually a shroud, connected to a set of bellows. it helps to block out the light and give a clear view of the screen. another cool gadget i didn't know existed.

4909190286_fd7301e3fb.jpg

those large, white shiny things are used to deflect and adjust the light and find the right balance for each shot. in addition to the big canon, jeremiah also had a hasselblad h-1 film camera on hand, as well as a canon eos 1-n as a backup. he really enjoys shooting film, and though he loves digital, explains that there is just something about the way film captures natural night, so he usually brings both cameras to fashion shoots.

4908600845_e731d84dca.jpg

fashion photography is a job for someone with a great eye, and a wonderful sense of composition. it's also a job someone with the ability to manage dozens of tiny details, and get them to work in harmony. for this shoot, there were many factors that needed to be considered, managed and incorporated into the photos: the weather, sun, wind, the props the model was holding and standing on, the clothing, the hair style and colour, and of course the main focus, the steve madden shoes. the hackneyed phrase "it's harder than it looks" was definitely coined by someone observing the logistics at a fashion shoot.

4909191112_617d29d45b.jpg

during the shoot, we had a few questions come in for jeremiah, via twitter. since i know many of you have a thing for fashion, as well as photography, i decided to find out as much as i could about his work, himself, and the world of high fashion photography and report back.

jeremiah explained that he's always been interested in photography, and became more obsessed with images when he started snapping photos of his friends shredding at the skatepark. then things just took off from there. you'd never guess it by the quality of his work, or the high profile gigs he's done, but mr. wilson has only been shooting fashion as a professional for 4 years!

he calls new york city home, but his favourite places to shoot are spread all over the world. a stint living in paris got him hooked on using the palais de tokyo as a subject. in fact he loves everything about slinging a camera around the city of lights, especially...the lights. he is enamored by the way the paris streets are illuminated after sundown. the streets have appeared in some his best work, and the classic architecture lining the streets means you are never more than a short walk to the perfect setting to snap. the citizens in paris also hold a special place in his photographer's heart. he explained to me that "everyone you meet is so friendly, and so interested in your work and what you're shooting. they genuinely want to know what you're creating. even the police." sao paulo, brazil and new york city also get high marks in his book of photo friendly places to shoot.

4908599277_1554986abb.jpg

being something of a hack photographer myself, i asked jeremiah what does a professional photographer do that makes their images look so much better than the ones i shoot (other than my lack of talent)? he explained that while the skill of the photographer plays a big part in how the photo turns out, there's three things that turn an ordinary fashion photo into one that's worthy of an ad in italian vogue.

1. a great stylist - according to jeremiah, stylists are the unsung and under appreciated heroes of the fashion world. they bring their own creativity to the models' own looks, and create a vibe that stands out, but compliments the beauty of the model and the clothes without overpowering them.

2. your device - in fashion photography, you deal with an extraordinary amount of color, texture, details and motion. using the right camera is the only way to include these subtleties in the finished work. specifically, he recommends using a lens with a really wide f-stop, at least 1.2.

3. the model - i said 'duh' to this one, but jeremiah explained there's a lot more to modeling than looking hot. a great model will look attractive, but will also be capable of displaying a wide range of genuine emotions. a real smile, or an authentic sultry glare at the camera are what makes a good fashion photo great, and a great photo a classic. just my few hours on the set made this very clear to me. being told to smirk, or pout, or get excited on command for hours on end, and make it look genuine, is an incredibly difficult task.

4909190916_28264be982.jpg

watching jeremiah work makes it clear that this is a man who really, really loves his job. he can speak passionately about the art of photography for hours on end, without ever tiring of the subject or running out of fresh insights. this is especially clear when he discusses traditional film. as he keeps working, one of his big goals is to continue shooting as much film as he can. he told me, "the pure look of film, and the texture and the grain can't be duplicated any other way, and people just love the way it looks."

though he loves film, he's not a luddite. the majority of his work is digital. he enjoys the post-production process as well, and can easily spend hours on a single image using photoshop on his mac to achieve the perfect final result. he recommends that any aspiring shooter spend as much time learning the intricacies of photoshop as they do learning to frame a shot. it's a skill that is becoming more and more valuable as we complete the shift to a fully digital and web based world. photoshop, and computer post-processing have replaced the dark room in the photographers' skill set.

4909189844_cb0592f3a5.jpg

a majority of his work is fashion photography, but jeremiah is interested in shooting all types of images. skateboarding, bmx bike riding, architecture and party people getting down have all received lots of attention from his lens. some of his favourite recent projects have been shooting openings, parties and events in new york and miami for the uber-swank art book publisher taschen.

getting to spend an afternoon with someone who loves their work, and also happens to be supremely talented at it is a genuine pleasure. i feel like i became a better photographer, and developed a keener eye for fashion, just by hanging around him. learning about what goes into making a model, and their clothes, picture perfect makes you look at every ad in a fashion magazine with a deeper level of respect. making it look beautiful and easy, isn't easy at all.

4909189538_b9ee6255c4.jpg

you can see more of jeremiah's fashion work, including the most recent back-to school campaign from this photo shoot at the steve madden website. more of his fashion work, along with a wide variety of his photography in many genres is on display at his website, jeremiah wilson photography. if you have questions, comments or want to know more about the world of fashion and photography, his twitter account, @jeremiahwilson is absolutely worth following.
